One Word

If you were to choose one word to describe who you are as a follower of Jesus Christ, what word would you choose, and why?

"Forgiven" pops into my head right away...when someone forgives me, I am grateful for his love. I feel free because I no longer owe him restitution. I also feel more inclined to develop that relationship, since it's withstood failure on my end, and could do so again. This word reminds me of the story of the Prodigal Son, who was forgiven so completely that his father wouldn't let him finish his confession.

Do you have a word in mind, Jason?

The first thing I think of is, "Alive." A couple of reasons for that. First, we are (supposed to be) dead to sin and alive in Christ. Also, in my personal experience, I never feel more alive than when I am pressing hard after our Saviour.

I'm sure you can think of quite a few other reasons behind the word, but those are just the first few that come to my mind.

I started thinking, and Servant* came first to mind.

The first Bible verse that triggered this word is one of my favorites, "Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it." Psalm 119:140(KJV)

I am also reminded of Matthew 20:26b-28 (ESV)"But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

I also think of Psalm 123:2 (ESV) "Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he has mercy upon us."

I aspire to be a servant of the Lord, and this is because I realize and appreciate that God has firstly adopted me as a son. I am often a very bad servant, but the Lord is merciful and long suffering.

Lord, make me a servant.
